I have been to a few markets in the past year – and on occasion heard the resemblance of Julie’s Little People to the Cabbage Patch Kid. It never really occurred to me that they were similar, although coming off the back of the most recent Finders Keepers – I was more intrigued than ever to find out more about this doll.
I think every little girl born in the late 70’s early 80’s had a Cabbage Patch Kid, or knew someone that had one. They were awesome – a miniature person with an adoption certificate, and a name! I had two - Wanda my first, Graham my second. I loved them both so much. Today Graham is stashed away at my mum’s house somewhere and unfortunately for Wanda - hours of using my fingers to brush out her woollen hair took its toll, with her head splitting open whilst on a family holiday.
Flashback - yesterday lunch time:
I’m forking mouthfuls of vegetable curry into my mouth whilst googling Cabbage Patch Kids. I could not believe what I was reading - Their original name was ‘Little People’! Not only that, Xavier Roberts first started exhibiting and selling his ‘Little People’ at art and craft shows. Say Whaaat!
Reading this totally got me pumped for 2015! It’s going to be my big year. If Xavier can sell 3 million within 7 years from time of concept, I’m in with a chance.
For the record: A friend threw Little People out as a name in 2010. I took it, and I‘d be damn surprised if he knew what a Cabbage Patch Kid was.
